Autumn 1
Welcome back! In Year 2 we have been getting back into the swing of it, settling back into school routines.
Week 4
This week Year 2 have been working really hard. In writing, we have completed our first "big write", writing a diary entry from the perspective of Sunny after he spent the day at school. The children worked very hard, all week, on their big writes and should be very proud of themselves!
In Maths, again the children have been working very hard. We have started Unit 2 - addition and subtraction. This week we have focused on using known facts to help with 2 digit addition and subtraction. For example, if I know 2+3 is 5, then I know that 12 + 3 = 15.
The children showed great perseverance in computing when we were unable to log in! Instead we created a class image using the smart board, where the children waited patiently for their turn and worked collaboratively.
In Science we listened to a Now Press Play. These are interactive sessions where the children are immersed into a world. This week we helped the recycling wizard to ensure that the correct materials were recycled.

We also helped The Three Pigs to build a house of suitable materials. We investigated the suitability of different materials for building a house.
In Geography we have continued to learn about the seaside. We discussed the importance of protecting our beaches and created a list of things we can do, to keep our beaches clean.
In RE and worldviews we have continued to consider what impact our worldviews and the idea that each person's world view is unique.
This week we celebrated European Languages day (26/09). It was interesting to learn about all the different languages we speak in Year 2. Our music lesson linked nicely, and was a song about how to say hello in different languages!

Spellings:
Weeks 1 & 2
In Maths we have started our first unit: numbers within 100. We have been looking at partitioning numbers in to tens ones.
In English we have started Meerkat Mail, following Sunny the meerkat as he travels far and wide! We have written character descriptions of Sunny using impressive vocabulary choices. We have also answered some retrieval questions based on the story so far.
We have started our first Science unit, looking into materials and their uses. The children have been identifying different materials and describing their properties.
In Geography, we have been discussing the Big Question: Why do we like to be beside the sea? We have identified similarities and differences between urban, rural and coast. The children have also been sharing different activities they like to do beside the sea!
In Computing the children looked at how to be safe online - creating informative posters based on their learning.
In RE and Worldviews, we have been thinking about what our worldviews are and what influences them.
Homework & Spellings
This week children will practice gn and kn spellings and complete a place value worksheet.
Week 3
This week we have done lots of learning in Year 2.
In Maths we have continued to develop our knowledge of numbers within 100. We have been ordering, comparing and sequencing numbers within 100.
The children really enjoyed watching the Number Gators song!
In English, we have continued to follow Sunny's travels across the desert. We have practiced using capital letters, full stops and question marks and the applied these skills to a postcard written from the perspective of Sunny if he visited London. It seems as though he had lots of fun!
In Science, we investigated how materials can change and experimented with twisting, bending, stretching and squashing a variety of materials.
In Geography, we continued our Big Question investigation, and learned about food chains and rockpools. We talked about what animals might live in a rockpool and how food chains work.
In Art we have been exploring different materials and textures, using graphite, charcoal and chalk to experiment. We then created texture rubbings with different things found in the playground.
Homework & Spellings
This week children will practice their wr spellings and complete an ordering numbers activity sheet.
17/09/26 We believe that developing strong speaking and listening skills is key to our children’s confidence and success.
