Meet and Greet Year 6

 

We have had a lot of fun in Year 6 this week. The children had their individual photographs taken on Tuesday; they proved that they might be the oldest in the school but they can still look angelic! The week has been full of learning too - it has been wonderful to see the progress children are making already in their lessons. We have been talking a lot about resilience, and how it's okay to find things challenging but we mustn't give up! Well done to all of the children who have approached their learning with resilience this week!

English - We have begun our new text, Journey to the River Sea. This week, children have developed their inference and prediction skills. They have also been learning about effective setting descriptions. I have been blown away by their efforts!

Maths - This week in Maths has focused on Multiplication and Division. We have developed our understanding of factors and multiples, using these to help us find efficient calculation strategies. We have talked about the importance of times tables knowledge - remember to practise on Times Tables Rockstars to keep your recall sharp!

Art - The children have really enjoyed sketching a scene from the natural world and using watercolours to paint their pictures, imitating the work of Turner and Hokusai. Haven't they done an amazing job?

Music - We are continuing our unit on Grime music. It has been lovely to see the children's enthusiasm as they create their own music using drums, bass, vocals and sounds effects. These lessons are a lot of fun - if a little noisy!

Geography - This week, we have revised our knowledge of the water cycle. Although we have learnt this before, it's great to build on our knowledge and apply it as we learn more about rivers. We asked the question: Why are rivers an important part of the water cycle?

Science - In Science, children learnt about what blood is made up of. They identified the different parts: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. They then learnt about the important jobs that each part does. Finally, we made our own blood! It was brilliant to see how much the children were able to remember - and of course, it was very exciting to do it practically!

Today is National Teaching Assistants' Day! We are so lucky to have Mrs Vale supporting us in Year 6 as well as a whole team of teaching assistants who help us throughout our time in school. 

Phew - what a week! Have a lovely rest this weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday. 

 

 

 

 

 

What a busy week it has been in Year 6!

Geography - We continue to investigate our Big Question: What is a river? This week, we focused on estuaries, understanding what they are and why they are important to wildlife. Children researched different types of wading birds that can be found in estuaries in the UK. 

Science - We investigated how exercise affects our heart rate. Children enjoyed measuring their heart rate before and after exercise and calculating the difference. They compared results after exercising legs and arms to see which made the biggest change to their heart rate. 

Music - Children enjoyed learning about grime music and even had a go at creating their own! They used iPads to create a drum beat.

17/09/26 We believe that developing strong speaking and listening skills is key to our children’s confidence and success. Our weekly class oracy assemblies provide a fantastic opportunity for pupils to practise clear communication, active listening, and respectful discussion. From storytelling to debate, every child is encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas in a supportive environment. We have had a wonderful first full week in school! It has been lovely to see the children adjusting to life in Year 6, enjoying being with their friends, having fun and working hard.  

English - Children have been thinking about what makes a good House Captain, including the important qualities and responsibilities. During the week, we have looked at the features of persuasive writing, analysing an example speech, before drafting our own. Children have also enjoyed practising their handwriting using our new videos!

Maths - This week, we have been learning to read and write numbers up to ten million, in words and digits. Children have explored numbers using different representations, whilst ordering and comparing. They have also built on their knowledge of rounding in different contexts. 

Science - We are having lots of fun learning about the circulatory system! This week, we took our learning outside and acted out the journey of blood around the body. The children became oxygenated and deoxygenated blood cells, travelling from the heart to the lungs to collect oxygen before being pumped all around the body. It was a fantastic way to bring our science learning to life, and the children did a brilliant job explaining each stage of the journey as they moved around the playground.

Geography - This half term, we will be investigating the Big Question: What is a river? This week, we followed the journey of the River Axe from source to mouth. We explored how rivers change as they travel downstream and have learnt to identify key river features along the way. We have also been developing our geographical vocabulary, confidently using terms such as source, tributary, meander, floodplain and mouth. 

Computing - In Computing this week, we started our new unit on blogging using Purple Mash. The children explored what a blog is and discussed the different features that make a blog interesting and effective for readers. We thought about how bloggers share information, opinions and experiences online. 

And finally, good luck to those children who will be sitting their 11+ exams this weekend. You have worked very hard to prepare. Just do your best - we are all rooting for you!
